About
Fergus Berney-Gibson is an artist based on Gadigal land whose practice explores fraternal historiography through the re-contextualisation of found textile and photographic archives. Through contemporary print-media and gendered craft techniques, he reinterprets the psychosexual threads of homosocial narrative forms: bildungsroman, scripture and folklore. He consolidates these with the structural semiotics of masculine place. Scout halls, saunas, church basements, workshops and pubs are reconsidered into wall reliefs, tactile objects and tapestries. Each of his works question how these pseudo-historical grand narratives are made and how they can be re-made to prioritise embodiment, connection and experience.
